Hello HEA Members!

Mitch Michaud Homer

Thank you for being a Homer Electric Association voter!

I’m a big believer in our community and one of my favorite things about life here is owning my very own
energy co-op. All us Homer Electric Association members get a chance to vote for an HEA Board of Directors to build the energy future we want to see. HEA elections are now online and you'll receive an  email or snail mail with a secure voting code on April 3. If you prefer a paper ballot, you can request one here - do so soon!

Homer Electric rates went up again this year. This is just another cost of living headache for our families. Despite years and years of closed-door executive session, the HEA Board still hasn’t solved the crisis of dwindling Cook Inlet gas. 85-88% of our electricity supply comes from the Inlet but reserves are depleted and the supplier tells us they won’t guarantee future supply. Without a major change, we're about to become dependent on imported gas shipped across the sea that'll be even more expensive. Why aren’t we diversifying with all the cheaper, cleaner local options that can keep our energy dollars here at home?

It’s time for a change at HEA.

As a forester and fisherman, I’ve dedicated my life’s work to Alaska’s resources and their responsible use. In the course of that career, I've gotten to work on big energy projects and with regulatory compliance standards like NEPA. In 2025, I was honored to earn a Fellow award from the Society of American Foresters. Here at home, I'm an enthusiastic community volunteer, from service as an interim Executive Director with the Kenai Watershed Forum and as PCHS’ Board Chair, where I've coordinated large teams as they tackled big challenges - bringing trust and transparency to the board room.

I’m asking for your vote in this month’s HEA Board Election. The time for excuses, endless rate hikes, and missed opportunities is over. It’s time for a board that puts cooperation back in our co-op and starts a proactive conversation with the community about what exactly we’re going to do.

I'd be honored to earn your vote in this month's HEA election. Members can vote online and - if you requested one - by mail ballot starting April 3. If you're a member that receives regular emails from the co-op, you'll be emailed a safe voting code right away. If you don't receive regular emails from the co-op, you'll be physically mailed a code to vote online.

If you have questions or ideas, please reach out to me at Mitch@MitchforHEA.com.
